Nativity Softball
Nativity has fielded a men’s slowpitch softball team in the Kent Church League since 1972. The first practice is always the worst weather of the year on the closest Sunday to St Patrick’s Day; this year it will be March 20 at 1:00 pm at Petrovitsky Park.

Men who are 14 to 76 years of age are eligible. Women are eligible, though all but a few prefer the co-ed leagues. The cost is about $85 per season per player since the nativity budget subsidizes the per-team fee. Games are played on the back fields of Russell Road Park (RR 3, 4, 5) and occasionally at Service Club Fields.

League play begins in April and lasts for about ten weeks with an end-of-season tournament. The schedule often consists of Monday evening double headers at 6:00 and 7:15 or at 8:30 and 9:45. A typical schedule would include two games against five teams with single games against another five teams in another higher-or-lower division. Long-time rivals include Peace Lutheran, EOPC, Faith Baptist, and River of Life.

Mike Batt is the team manager. Art Batt is the producer; and Chuck O’Brien (service since 1973) is the bench coach. The schedule for the coming week is printed in the church bulletin. The league schedule, standings, and rainout data are online.

Nativity Lutheran has fielded a men’s softball team for the over 35 years.  Part of the Kent Parks and Recreation Church League, the team provides fun, fellowship and team spirit from April through June.  This year’s team, coached by Mike Batt, is made up of a mix of experienced players and newcomers.
